The United States is expanding its pressure campaign against Iran beyond the maritime domain, with U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announcing the formation of a new unit designed to disrupt Tehran’s access to land-based trade and supply routes. Named Task Force Iron Gate, the initiative will focus on preventing the movement of advanced weapons systems, dual-use technologies, sanctioned materials, and what Washington describes as illicit revenue streams across Iran’s land borders and the Caspian Sea.
The task force will consist of approximately 20 military and civilian personnel and will be based in Tampa, Florida. It is expected to coordinate with other U.S. government agencies as part of a broader effort to restrict Iran’s ability to obtain military-related equipment, replenish its weapons capabilities, and generate revenue through prohibited networks.
CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper said the initiative builds on the U.S. naval blockade against Iran, arguing that closer coordination between military and civilian agencies would further constrain Tehran’s ability to finance activities Washington considers destabilizing, rebuild weapons factories, and replenish its military.
CENTCOM also claims that the naval blockade has prevented Iran from exporting more than $25 billion worth of crude oil. This figure represents the command’s own estimate and has not been independently verified. The new task force signals an effort to extend enforcement pressure from Iranian ports and maritime routes to the country’s overland supply networks and Caspian connections.
However, the announcement does not establish a comprehensive closure of Iran’s land borders or a total ban on ordinary cross-border trade. Its stated mission is more specifically focused on disrupting the movement of restricted goods, military-related technology, and illicit financial flows. The effectiveness of the initiative will depend on how Washington coordinates with relevant agencies and how far its enforcement efforts can reach across regional trade networks.
