Stronger-than-expected US employment data could create short-term headwinds for the cryptocurrency market by reducing expectations of rapid interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve.
According to the figures provided, average hourly earnings increased by 0.4% month over month, exceeding the 0.3% forecast and the previous reading of 0.1%. Meanwhile, Non-Farm Employment Change reached 165,000, significantly above expectations of 65,000 and the previous figure of 29,000.
The US unemployment rate also declined to 4.1%, beating the market forecast of 4.2%.
Together, these figures point to a stronger-than-expected US labor market. Higher wage growth may also add to inflationary pressures, potentially giving the Federal Reserve less room to lower interest rates quickly.
For the cryptocurrency market, this could be a bearish short-term signal. A stronger labor market may support the US dollar and Treasury yields, while reducing demand for risk-sensitive assets such as Bitcoin and altcoins.
Bitcoin could face selling pressure if investors adjust their expectations for monetary policy. Ethereum and smaller cryptocurrencies may experience greater volatility, particularly if liquidity conditions tighten and leveraged positions begin to unwind.
However, the market reaction will also depend on how much of the data was already priced in. If Bitcoin holds its key support levels despite the stronger employment figures, it could indicate that investors have already absorbed much of the negative news.
Traders will now be watching the US dollar, Treasury yields, and Bitcoin's price action to assess whether the employment report triggers a broader market correction or merely temporary volatility.
