Bitcoin is gaining further recognition as a potential long-term investment asset, with JPMorgan placing the cryptocurrency at the top of its expected-return projections in its 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Expectations report.
According to the figures cited in the report, JPMorgan forecasts a 10% compound annual return for Bitcoin over the next decade, putting it ahead of several traditional investment categories, including major US stocks and gold.
The bank's projections estimate annualized returns of 9.8% for private equity, 7.5% for large-cap US equities, 7% for a traditional 60/40 stock-and-bond portfolio, and 5.5% for smaller portfolios.
JPMorgan also estimates Bitcoin's correlation with large-cap US stocks at approximately 33%. This relatively low correlation suggests that Bitcoin could offer diversification benefits when included in a broader investment portfolio.
The report highlights Bitcoin's evolving position in institutional investment strategies. Once viewed primarily as a highly speculative asset, Bitcoin is increasingly being considered in discussions about long-term portfolio construction and diversification.
Grayscale Head of Research Zach Pandl also commented on the findings, noting that Bitcoin's growing institutional acceptance does not mean its role in investment portfolios has been fully established. However, its relatively limited correlation with large-cap US equities could create opportunities for investors seeking diversification.
Despite the optimistic return forecast, Bitcoin remains a volatile asset. JPMorgan's projected 10% annualized return is an estimate rather than a guaranteed outcome, and actual performance could differ significantly depending on market conditions, regulation, liquidity, and institutional demand.
Nevertheless, the projection reinforces the growing debate over Bitcoin's role in traditional investment portfolios and signals continued interest from major financial institutions in the cryptocurrency's long-term potential.
