OpenAI is reportedly nearing a funding round of up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation, as the artificial intelligence company prepares for a potential initial public offering. The financing could strengthen OpenAI’s position in the increasingly competitive AI market while providing additional capital to support its enormous computing infrastructure requirements.
Investors from the United Arab Emirates and investment firm Coatue are reportedly leading the funding discussions, according to people familiar with the matter. The proposed $1.25 trillion valuation excludes the new capital, which could bring OpenAI’s total valuation to approximately $1.28 trillion. However, the final size of the round remains undecided.
The financing is being positioned as a bridge toward a potential IPO. OpenAI has reportedly told investors that it aims to secure signatures by the end of next week. Discussions began in September after investors approached the company with proposals for additional financing.
Alongside the funding round, OpenAI is reportedly negotiating a commercial agreement to secure additional computing capacity from the UAE. The discussions come as the company expects to spend approximately $600 billion on computing infrastructure by 2030, highlighting the enormous financial demands of developing and operating advanced AI systems.
OpenAI’s fundraising efforts follow its confidential IPO filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission in June. Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar reportedly told employees in August that the company expects to go public in 2027. However, CEO Sam Altman expressed caution the following month, suggesting that prevailing market conditions made an immediate listing inadvisable.
A potential public offering would represent a major milestone for OpenAI, placing the company under greater scrutiny from public-market investors. Its ability to sustain growth while managing substantial infrastructure costs will likely be central to investor confidence, particularly as expectations surrounding AI valuations continue to rise.
Competition is also intensifying as Anthropic prepares for a potential public listing. The company confidentially filed its IPO prospectus in June and has since held meetings with prospective investors. Anthropic is reportedly seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion, potentially positioning it alongside OpenAI among the most highly valued companies in the AI sector.
Anthropic’s recent fundraising highlights the scale of capital flowing into leading AI developers. In May, the company raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation, demonstrating the extraordinary investor appetite for businesses competing at the forefront of artificial intelligence.
Both companies are pursuing potential public listings while committing enormous resources to computing infrastructure. Growing demand for advanced AI models is driving investment in data centers, cloud services and computing capacity, making access to capital an increasingly important competitive advantage.
For OpenAI, a funding round of up to $30 billion could provide additional financial flexibility ahead of its potential 2027 IPO. However, the final fundraising amount, valuation and listing timeline remain uncertain. Investors will be watching whether the company can secure the financing it seeks while demonstrating that its long-term infrastructure commitments can translate into sustainable growth and profitability.
