Four masked men reportedly broke into the home of a cryptocurrency industry employee in France, tying up him, his wife and their two children, aged 8 and 12, during a robbery targeting his digital assets.
The attackers reportedly remained inside the home for more than three hours, using threats and physical violence to force the father to provide access information for his crypto holdings. The perpetrators then transferred approximately €40,000 worth of cryptocurrency before leaving the property.
After the attackers fled, the family managed to free themselves. French police have opened an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The incident highlights a direct physical security risk associated with the ownership of digital assets. Unlike traditional financial theft, where access to an account may require remote authentication, criminals targeting crypto holders can attempt to obtain wallet credentials or authorization information directly from victims.
The case also comes amid reports of a broader wave of crypto-related robberies and kidnapping incidents in France. For digital-asset holders, the episode reinforces the importance of separating physical security from digital asset security, particularly when criminals may target individuals because of their perceived access to cryptocurrency.
The next focus will be the French investigation and whether authorities identify the perpetrators, recover the transferred assets, or establish links between this incident and other reported crypto-related attacks.
