Kalshi is expanding its appeal to cryptocurrency traders with a new service that will allow eligible clients to borrow against digital assets and use the proceeds to fund leveraged futures positions. The initiative, developed in partnership with crypto custodian BitGo, could help the US-regulated platform attract traders who want to maintain exposure to their crypto holdings while accessing additional trading capital.
Through Kalshi Prime, eligible customers will be able to use Bitcoin, Ether and certain compliant stablecoins as collateral for loans provided by Kalshi Katalyst, a lending affiliate of Kalshi Prime. The assets will be held at BitGo Bank & Trust under a tri-party collateral management arrangement designed to govern how collateral is secured and managed.
The structure addresses a practical concern for crypto-native investors: accessing trading liquidity without selling their existing digital assets. For businesses holding dollar-backed stablecoins or investors seeking to retain long-term Bitcoin exposure, borrowing against crypto could provide another way to fund derivatives positions. However, the arrangement also introduces borrowing costs, collateral requirements and the risk of forced liquidation if asset values fall.
The launch builds on Kalshi’s expansion into perpetual futures, contracts that have no fixed expiration date. The company has been developing products linked to cryptocurrencies and precious metals while exploring additional markets. Its latest move also reflects growing competition for sophisticated traders who increasingly expect platforms to offer flexible collateral and margin arrangements.
Kalshi faces competition from offshore crypto trading venues that have traditionally appealed to users seeking leveraged products. By allowing eligible customers to use digital assets as collateral within a US-regulated framework, the company hopes to narrow that gap while serving institutional clients and large individual traders.
The key test will be whether the service can attract meaningful trading activity while managing credit, collateral and regulatory risks. Borrowing against volatile assets can magnify gains, but it can also accelerate losses when markets move against leveraged positions. As crypto-backed lending becomes more integrated with derivatives trading, risk controls and transparency will be central to its long-term viability.
