Tesla’s New Roadster Defies Gravity as SpaceX Rocket Technology Takes Supercar Performance to Another Level

Nine years after Tesla first unveiled its long-awaited second-generation Roadster, Elon Musk’s electric supercar has returned with a radical transformation that goes far beyond conventional performance. What was once presented as an ultra-fast electric sports car has evolved into an experimental machine combining extreme aerodynamic grip, compressed-air propulsion and technology developed alongside SpaceX.

Unveiled at SpaceX’s rocket testing facility in McGregor, Texas, on October 15, the new Roadster immediately challenged expectations. Its demonstration included driving up an inverted ramp, remaining upside down through a powerful suction system, and using compressed-air thrusters to return to an upright position. The prototype also demonstrated its ability to jump over a lineup of Tesla vehicles, including the electric Semi.

The most striking innovation is a powerful fan integrated beneath the vehicle. Tesla claims the system can generate up to 2 g of downforce, effectively pulling the car toward the road and allowing it to maintain grip in situations that would be impossible for conventional road cars. The technology draws comparisons with the fan-assisted racing concept pioneered by the Brabham BT46B in 1978, although Tesla appears determined to bring the idea into a modern high-performance vehicle.

The Roadster’s connection with SpaceX introduces an even more unconventional dimension. Its cold-gas propulsion system reportedly uses two carbon-wrapped tanks containing approximately 250 kilograms of compressed air, distributed through ten nozzles. Rather than relying on conventional rocket fuel, the system uses compressed air to generate additional thrust, with an onboard compressor designed to replenish the supply. Tesla claims this technology helps push acceleration into territory rarely associated with production vehicles.

Performance figures are equally ambitious. The most extreme Rocket configuration is claimed to accelerate from zero to 97 km/h in less than 0.59 seconds, while the Thrust version targets less than 0.9 seconds. However, these figures remain manufacturer claims associated with the prototype and its specialized equipment, rather than independently verified production-car results.

Tesla is introducing three configurations: Performance, Thrust and Rocket. The Performance model is positioned as the conventional road-going version, while Thrust adds rear-facing air thrusters. Rocket represents the most extreme interpretation, featuring the complete propulsion system and a single-seat configuration. Tesla says this flagship will not be available in every market and is not approved for public-road use.

The contrast with the original 2017 announcement is significant. The earlier Roadster was presented with four seats, a 200 kWh battery, a claimed range of approximately 1,000 kilometers and a starting price of $200,000. The new prototype has two seats, a more radical engineering philosophy and no officially published battery capacity, driving range or final purchase price. Its claimed top speed of more than 370 km/h also falls below the over-400-km/h target associated with the original concept.

Yet the biggest challenge facing Tesla may not be engineering. It is credibility and delivery. The Roadster has experienced repeated delays since its original unveiling, with earlier production targets passing without the vehicle reaching customers. Musk now points to 2028 as the expected production start, but the company still needs to demonstrate that its most ambitious technologies can survive the transition from spectacular prototype demonstrations to a commercially viable vehicle.

For international buyers, regulatory approval presents another major obstacle. A vehicle designed around extreme suction force and compressed-air propulsion will face questions about road safety, certification and practical usability. Tesla has not yet explained how these systems would satisfy regulatory requirements across different markets.

Ultimately, the new Roadster represents a much bigger ambition than simply building the fastest electric car. Tesla is attempting to redefine what a road-going performance vehicle can become, blending electric propulsion with technologies that have traditionally belonged to motorsport and aerospace engineering.

The thrusters may capture the headlines, but the suction fan could prove to be the more important innovation. If Tesla can deliver that technology in a road-legal production car by 2028, the Roadster could become one of the most unconventional developments in the history of electric performance vehicles. Until then, its biggest test remains turning an extraordinary demonstration into a machine customers can actually buy and drive.
