The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched Pontes, a platform designed to connect private blockchain networks with the ECB’s payment infrastructure. ECB President Christine Lagarde announced the platform as a new step toward integrating blockchain-based financial systems with central bank money.
Pontes will allow banks to transact and settle tokenized assets using central bank money, potentially enabling faster settlement with fewer barriers between blockchain-based networks and existing financial infrastructure.
The platform represents the first step toward the broader Appia initiative, which aims to develop blockchain-based financial infrastructure allowing banks to trade digital assets within an integrated system and settle related transactions using central bank money.
The ECB’s public-use digital euro is a separate project. Testing of the public digital euro is scheduled to begin in mid-2027, while Pontes is specifically designed for settlement between financial institutions and does not represent a public launch of the digital euro.
The market will watch how Pontes develops as the ECB moves toward broader blockchain-based financial infrastructure through the Appia initiative.
