The US Department of Justice has initiated legal action to seize approximately $61 million in cryptocurrency that prosecutors allege was derived from the illegal sale of Iranian oil. The case targets crypto assets that US authorities say were used to move proceeds connected to the oil sales.
According to the case, two Chinese companies, Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale, used accounts at Binance to transfer part of the proceeds linked to Iranian oil sales. The allegations place cryptocurrency at the center of a broader financial network that prosecutors say was used to move funds generated by oil transactions.
US prosecutors further allege that a network connected to the two companies moved more than $1.5 billion in Iranian oil-sale proceeds through cryptocurrency. They also claim that part of those funds was ultimately transferred to entities linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The Justice Department’s action is aimed at securing the seizure and forfeiture of the cryptocurrency identified in the case. However, the allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings and have not yet been established as facts in court.
The case also distinguishes between the alleged use of Binance accounts and any liability by the exchange itself. Binance is not identified as a defendant in the case, according to the provided information, and its accounts are described as having been used to facilitate transfers of part of the funds referenced by prosecutors.
For the crypto market, the case highlights the increasing focus of US authorities on cryptocurrency transactions connected to sanctions and illicit oil revenues. The immediate issue is the legal process surrounding the proposed $61 million seizure and whether prosecutors can establish the allegations underlying the forfeiture action.
The case will now depend on the outcome of the judicial proceedings and the evidence presented by US authorities. Until those allegations are proven, the claims concerning the origin and movement of the funds remain allegations rather than established findings.
