Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko has criticized recent calls from leading AI executives to slow down advanced artificial intelligence development, suggesting that financial incentives may be playing a role in the debate.
The comments came after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and xAI founder Elon Musk expressed support for a more cautious approach to AI development, citing concerns around safety and the potential risks of increasingly powerful AI systems.
Reacting to Anthropic’s statement “We Must Pace the Frontier” on X, Yakovenko posted a short comment: “Profitability at $1 trillion mcap”, implying that major AI companies may also be motivated by the need to justify massive valuations and move closer to profitability.
Yakovenko later joked that he had instructed his AI assistant to use tokens more efficiently, appearing to mock calls for a temporary slowdown in AI progress.
The Solana founder’s comments reflect a broader debate within the technology industry: whether AI safety concerns should lead to slower development, or whether companies are using regulation and caution as a way to manage rising infrastructure costs, including expensive chips and energy requirements.
As AI companies continue to attract huge investments, the balance between rapid innovation, safety, and long-term profitability remains one of the biggest discussions in the technology sector.
