Polygon Foundation CEO Sandeep Nailwal announced that the network will permanently remove 100 million POL tokens from circulation, expanding the blockchain’s efforts to introduce a more deflationary token structure.
Nailwal said in a post on X that the burn contract has already been deployed on the Polygon testnet and will move to the mainnet after the Polygon Security Council completes its final signatures. The planned burn follows months of community discussions focused on adjusting POL’s supply dynamics as network activity continues to expand.
The initial 100 million POL reduction will be executed as a one-time event using tokens accumulated through Polygon’s fee collector. According to the announcement, the collector currently holds approximately 121 million POL. Once the burn mechanism becomes active, additional POL accumulated through network fees could be burned quarterly, creating an ongoing supply reduction process tied to blockchain activity.
The mechanism connects token supply changes directly with network usage by converting accumulated fee revenue into permanent supply removal. Polygon has reported that it has already been operating in a deflationary state since January 2026, as base fees have continued accumulating in the collector.
For Polygon, the burn represents another step in the network’s transition from MATIC to POL and its broader strategy around building an aggregated blockchain ecosystem. POL functions as Polygon’s native gas and staking token, making its supply structure a key part of discussions around the network’s long-term token economics.
By linking fee generation with token removal, Polygon is adopting a model designed to balance token emissions with network activity. The approach reflects a broader trend among blockchain networks seeking token models where usage contributes directly to supply management.
The burn announcement comes as Polygon reports approximately $24.5 million in 2026 revenue, according to the foundation. The network has also been shifting its strategic focus toward blockchain payments while continuing to support stablecoin activity, including PayPal’s PYUSD stablecoin usage on Polygon.
Market participants may now monitor the implementation of the burn contract, future fee collector activity, and whether sustained network usage can continue generating the conditions required for recurring POL supply reductions.
