Solana has reduced its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds, making the network’s block-production clock nearly 17% faster without an equivalent increase in total transaction capacity, according to blockchain data.
A slot is the short window during which a designated validator can add a block. At 250 milliseconds, Solana will target four slots per second, up from roughly 3.3. The change gives wallets, exchanges and trading applications a more current view of network activity.
Validators will continue to lead the network for four consecutive slots. With the shorter slot time, each validator’s control window falls from 1.2 seconds to one second, allowing transaction-ordering responsibility to move to the next validator sooner.
The change is particularly relevant for applications such as oracle-powered markets and automated market makers, where stale prices and even a few hundred milliseconds of uncertainty can affect transaction execution.
For users, faster slot production could mean quicker visibility into transaction updates and a smaller window for market prices to move before swaps reach the network. That could reduce some failed trades and lower the chance of receiving a materially different execution price, although the change itself does not increase Solana’s overall transaction capacity.
