Markets are now pricing a 64.2% probability of a 25-basis-point Federal Reserve rate hike at the September 16 meeting, according to CME FedWatch, marking a sharp shift from the lower expectations seen earlier in the month. The probability of rates remaining unchanged stands at 35.8%.
The repricing has already started feeding into risk assets. Bitcoin has slipped below the $77,000–$78,000 range as Treasury yields moved higher, while Ether and Solana have also come under pressure. The 10-year Treasury yield approaching 4.8% has added another layer of tightening pressure across both equities and crypto.
For digital assets, the significance extends beyond the September decision itself. Higher rate expectations generally tighten financial conditions and reduce the relative appeal of non-yielding assets such as Bitcoin, while higher yields can also push investors toward traditional fixed-income instruments. That dynamic becomes particularly important for altcoins, which typically carry greater sensitivity to changes in liquidity and risk appetite.
The market is therefore no longer pricing the September meeting as a low-probability policy event. At 64.2%, a hike has become the more likely outcome in current market pricing, meaning a decision to raise rates could be less disruptive than a further hawkish shift in the Fed’s guidance. Conversely, a hold or a softer policy message could force a rapid repricing across yields, the dollar and risk assets.
The key variable now is incoming U.S. economic data. Jobs, inflation and other indicators will determine whether the current rate-hike pricing continues to rise or begins to unwind before September 16.
For crypto markets, the immediate setup is increasingly defined by the interaction between Fed expectations and liquidity. If yields continue higher while hike expectations strengthen, Bitcoin and high-beta altcoins could face additional selling pressure. If those expectations reverse, the same positioning could create room for a relief move across risk assets.
