Dogecoin fell roughly 3.2 percentage points over the past 32 hours as several pressures converged, led by the expected liquidation of Bitwise’s BWOW Dogecoin ETF, bearish derivatives positioning and a broader crypto market risk-off move. DOGE traded below $0.09 on October 8, with the token falling about 3.5% to roughly $0.0876 during the period.
The impending BWOW liquidation is the most direct coin-specific catalyst identified in the move. Bitwise is expected to reach the ETF’s final trading day on October 14, with the fund’s DOGE holdings being converted to cash and distributions scheduled for October 22 based on net asset value as of October 21. While the ETF is relatively small, the prospect of additional selling pressure can weigh on sentiment as traders anticipate the liquidation process.
Derivatives positioning has reinforced the downside. Dogecoin’s perpetual open interest declined 13.34% over 24 hours to about $241 million on October 8, while the mark price was near $0.0875 and funding remained modestly positive. The long-to-short ratio also fell to its lowest level in more than a month, indicating that leveraged longs were being reduced while short positioning increased.
The move also occurred within a broader deterioration in crypto risk appetite. Total crypto market capitalization declined about 1.5%, while the altcoin market excluding Bitcoin fell roughly 1.6%, leaving Dogecoin’s daily decline of about 2% somewhat larger than the broader altcoin move. Bitcoin’s drop of about 3% below $83,000, alongside rising US yields and attention around Fed minutes, inflation data and labor-market data, added to the pressure on higher-beta crypto assets.
Technical positioning provides another layer of context. Dogecoin had been trading around the $0.09-$0.10 range and near $0.093 while remaining below its 200-day EMA, leaving the $0.088-$0.09 area as an important support zone. The earlier September rally and recent ETF inflows had also left a heavier supply area around $0.098-$0.10, potentially making DOGE more vulnerable when selling pressure increased.
The combination suggests that the recent decline is not attributable to a single event. ETF liquidation expectations created a coin-specific overhang, derivatives deleveraging amplified the move, and the broader risk-off environment reduced support for speculative assets.
There were no fresh Dogecoin Foundation announcements, new application-layer developments such as DogeOS, or significant viral X posts or celebrity endorsements identified as catalysts for the decline. That leaves the ETF liquidation process, derivatives positioning, broader crypto risk appetite and the $0.088-$0.09 support area as the key factors to watch as DOGE attempts to stabilize.
