The cryptocurrency market has come under renewed selling pressure, with Bitcoin falling about 4% over 24 hours to just above $80,000 and extending its decline to more than 8% from levels near $87,000 reached four days earlier.
The weakness has been broader across major digital assets. Ether and XRP declined roughly 6% over the past 24 hours, while Solana fell about 9%, with all three recording double-digit losses over the past week. The synchronized decline points to a broader reduction in risk appetite rather than an isolated move in Bitcoin.
The sell-off comes shortly before the one-year anniversary of the October 10, 2025 flash crash, when Bitcoin fell sharply from around $122,000 after reaching a record above $126,000 only days earlier. Much of that decline occurred within minutes during thin Friday evening trading in the United States, highlighting how quickly leveraged crypto markets can deteriorate under stressed liquidity conditions.
Several broader factors are adding to the current pressure. Rising oil prices and interest rates could reduce liquidity available for risk assets such as Bitcoin, while regulatory uncertainty following the failure of the Clarity Act and the upcoming U.S. midterm elections are creating additional sources of uncertainty for the digital-asset market.
Despite the short-term deterioration, institutional sentiment toward digital assets remains comparatively constructive. A State Street survey of 300 asset managers, asset owners and wealth managers found that approximately 51% expect digital assets to become mainstream within five years, compared with 11% in 2024.
The same survey indicated that institutions currently allocate an average of 11% of portfolios to digital assets and expect that allocation to increase over the next three years. The divergence between weakening market prices and improving institutional expectations suggests that longer-term adoption remains intact even as near-term market conditions deteriorate.
The immediate focus for the market will be whether Bitcoin can stabilize around the $80,000 area or whether continued macroeconomic and regulatory pressure triggers another leg lower across major digital assets.
