XRP Ledger payment volume plunged 72.3% to 119.5 million XRP on October 17, raising questions about whether weakening network activity is reinforcing the cryptocurrency’s recent price decline. The reported figure sits well below the 30-day average of 629.3 million XRP, marking a sharp contraction in the amount transferred between accounts on the network.
The following day’s preliminary reading showed approximately 37.5 million XRP in payment volume, a further decline of 68.6%. However, October 18 was not yet complete, meaning the figure could rise as additional transactions were recorded. The available data therefore indicate a sharp short-term slowdown, but do not yet establish a sustained decline in underlying network demand.
Historical figures provide important context. Daily payment volume over the previous year generally ranged between 300 million and 1 billion XRP, with temporary spikes reaching 2.5 billion in November and February. The latest reading is unusually low relative to those levels, although payment activity can fluctuate considerably. The reported declines also occurred on Friday and Saturday, making it important to distinguish a temporary reduction in weekend activity from a broader deterioration in network usage.
Price action, meanwhile, adds to the uncertainty. XRP is trading near $1.30 after retreating from a September high around $1.66. The decline has pushed the token below its 50-day, 100-day and 200-day moving averages, positioned between approximately $1.34 and $1.38. These averages now represent an important resistance zone, and XRP would need to recover this range to provide stronger evidence that buyers are regaining control.
Momentum remains weak, with the relative strength index near 40. Although this reading reflects bearish pressure, it does not place XRP in technically oversold territory. Trading volume has also declined since the August spike, suggesting that the recent market environment lacks the participation that accompanied earlier bursts of activity. Taken together, these indicators point to a fragile recovery outlook, although they do not independently confirm that further losses are inevitable.
The immediate downside level to watch is the $1.25–$1.27 support zone, where buyers reportedly intervened in mid-September and again during the latest trading period. A sustained close below this range would weaken the current support structure and bring $1.15 into focus, followed by the $1.00 area established in August. These levels represent potential areas of interest rather than guaranteed price targets.
For buyers, the first significant challenge is reclaiming the $1.34–$1.38 moving-average band. A sustained move above this range would improve the technical picture, although stronger participation would be needed to establish that the recovery has broader support. Until then, rallies could encounter selling pressure near former support levels that have turned into resistance.
The relationship between payment activity and price will be particularly important over the coming sessions. If daily ledger payment volume rebounds toward 500 million XRP while price stabilizes, the latest contraction may prove temporary. Conversely, persistently subdued activity alongside continued trading below the moving averages would reinforce concerns about weakening market participation and increase the risk of a breakdown beneath $1.25.
Nevertheless, payment volume alone cannot establish whether XRP is experiencing a fundamental deterioration. The metric measures XRP transferred between accounts, not the number of unique users, the value of economic activity generated, or the direction of investor demand. A decline may reflect reduced transactional activity, but additional evidence would be needed to determine its cause and broader significance.
For now, XRP faces pressure from both a weakening technical structure and an unusually sharp contraction in reported ledger payments. The decisive signals will be whether payment activity recovers toward its recent average and whether buyers can defend $1.25–$1.27. A recovery in both areas would ease immediate concerns, while continued weakness could leave XRP exposed to another downward move.
