Solana traded near $104 on October 18 as bearish technical indicators pointed to continued downside pressure, while Yuga Labs launched Mudwater, a physical and digital trading card collection built on Solana for Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) holders. The launch introduces a new collectible product to the Bored Ape ecosystem, but the available market data does not establish a direct relationship between the announcement and SOL’s price performance.
CoinGecko’s latest retrieved market snapshot placed SOL at approximately $104.04, giving the token a market capitalization of $61.34 billion and daily trading volume of around $1.84 billion. SOL traded between $101.41 and $104.96 over the preceding 24 hours and remained down approximately 5.6% over seven days, following a retreat from the $120–$125 area.
The immediate technical focus is the $100 support region. In an October 16 analysis, crypto analyst Iko identified $100 as the main level to watch, with SOL trading near $104.47 after reaching an intraday low of $103.91. The report placed support around $100.62, while the weekly 50-period moving average stood near $98.99.
These levels create a closely grouped support zone rather than a single isolated price point. Holding above $100 could preserve the possibility of a recovery attempt, while a sustained break below it would weaken the technical outlook and potentially allow selling pressure to continue. The proximity of the weekly moving average near $99 adds another reference point if the market moves through the psychological $100 threshold.
Momentum indicators also remain tilted to the downside. The supplied daily chart showed the MACD line at approximately -2.05, below its signal line at -0.42, with a negative histogram reading of -1.63. The Relative Strength Index stood at 38.86, below its moving average of 45.14 and the neutral 50 threshold.
Together, these readings indicate that bearish momentum remains dominant in the measured period. However, the RSI is still above the conventional oversold threshold of 30, meaning the indicator does not yet show a traditional oversold reading. A recovery in momentum would be more convincing if SOL reclaimed strength alongside an improvement in these indicators, while a sustained move below the identified support zone would reinforce the existing weakness.
Institutional selling has added to the pressure. U.S. spot Solana exchange-traded funds recorded nine consecutive sessions of withdrawals before the October 16 report. That streak provides additional context for the token’s decline, although the available information does not quantify the withdrawals or establish how much they contributed to SOL’s price movement.
The next scheduled catalyst identified in the material is Solana’s October 21 network upgrade. The Alpenglow upgrade is expected to target transaction finality of approximately 150 milliseconds. If delivered as intended, faster finality could strengthen the network’s technical proposition, but the stated target alone does not establish whether the upgrade will affect near-term token demand or market pricing. Traders may therefore distinguish between progress on network infrastructure and the immediate price signals emerging from the $100 support area.
Against this market backdrop, Yuga Labs confirmed on October 18 that Mudwater was live, allowing eligible BAYC and MAYC holders to begin claiming collectible card packs. The collection combines blockchain-based digital assets with physical trading cards, extending the Bored Ape ecosystem into a format that connects on-chain ownership with potential physical redemption.
The collection contains 120 artwork designs, including eight unique cracked-ice editions described as one-of-one collectibles. Its total supply is 240,000 packs, with each pack containing ten cards. Under the distribution rules, each BAYC NFT qualifies for ten packs, while each MAYC NFT qualifies for two.
The initial claim program has a deadline of January 19, 2027, at 00:00 UTC.
The allocation includes 171,216 packs reserved for the community airdrop, alongside additional supplies for community onboarding, partner communities and commercial distribution. The project has not published a final count of completed claims or confirmed how many packs had been opened as of October 18, leaving the level of actual participation unclear.
A central feature of Mudwater is its ApeCoin (APE) reward mechanism. Under the published terms, 2.5% of eligible NFT trading value is directed toward purchasing APE for distribution among collectors according to their qualifying holdings. A separate 2.5% royalty applies to transactions subject to the collection’s royalty terms.
For a $100 transaction, the stated APE allocation would amount to $2.50, with a separate $2.50 royalty applying where the published royalty conditions are met. These are distinct mechanisms, and the allocation toward APE purchases should not be interpreted as a guaranteed return for individual collectors. Actual distributions depend on eligible trading activity and qualifying holdings.
Mudwater also includes plans for converting digital collectibles into physical cards and vice versa. The project has outlined a mechanism to combine 24 pack tokens into a sealed box token, with ten box tokens qualifying for conversion into a case token. Physical-card redemption and the submission of physical cards for verification and tokenization are also identified as upcoming features rather than fully available services.
The project’s competitive card game provides another potential use case for the collection. A version using demonstration cards is available inside Otherside, while support for players’ actual on-chain Mudwater cards is planned for a later release. These features could give the collection utility beyond trading and collecting, although their eventual impact will depend on implementation and user participation.
For Solana, the launch adds another application built around digital ownership, collectibles and blockchain-based trading. However, the collection’s release and its ApeCoin purchasing mechanism do not, on their own, demonstrate a material increase in SOL demand. The project operates independently of SOL’s short-term market performance, and no direct price effect has been established.
The immediate focus for SOL remains the $100 support region, the nearby weekly moving average and whether bearish momentum begins to ease. ETF withdrawal activity and the October 21 upgrade are additional developments to watch, while Mudwater’s longer-term significance will depend on collector participation, trading activity and the rollout of its planned physical and digital features.
