Latin America is emerging as one of the world’s leading regions for stablecoin adoption, according to Chainalysis’ 2026 LATAM crypto report, which highlights growing demand for digital assets across payments, cross-border transactions, and financial services.
The report identifies Brazil as the largest crypto economy in the region and one of the most significant markets globally. Brazil received more than $252 billion in crypto inflows, placing it ahead of other Latin American economies, with Argentina ranking second.
Despite Brazil’s leading position, the report noted that regional growth was increasingly driven by other markets. Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela recorded significant expansion in crypto activity, with Venezuela showing the strongest growth rate among the highlighted economies.
Stablecoins have become a central part of the region’s digital asset activity. According to Chainalysis, stablecoins accounted for 32.1% of cross-border crypto value transferred in Latin America and represented 22.1% of domestic peer-to-peer exchange activity.
The report also highlighted changes in wallet preferences across the region. While Latin America has historically shown strong interest in self-custody wallets, users have increasingly adopted centralized crypto platforms that provide additional services such as trading, conversion, and financial products. Self-custody wallets now represent 28.8% of funds held in the region, compared with more than 50% before 2022.
Gabriel Campa, head of digital assets at Towerbank, said users increasingly want traditional banking and digital asset services combined within a single financial relationship. He noted that customers are seeking platforms where they can receive, store, exchange, transfer, spend, and access financial products without separating bank accounts from crypto services.
Venezuela remains a unique case within the regional crypto landscape. Economic instability, inflation concerns, and currency depreciation have contributed to increased crypto usage among merchants and consumers. According to Chainalysis analysts, recent economic and political uncertainty accelerated adoption of existing crypto infrastructure rather than creating demand from zero.
The report also identified Mexico as a significant stablecoin market, particularly for cross-border transactions. Chainalysis found that 81% of crypto activity in Mexico is focused on stablecoins, with monthly transaction values reaching approximately $1.8 billion in June 2026.
The growth of stablecoins across Latin America reflects broader trends in digital finance, where users are increasingly turning to blockchain-based assets for payments, transfers, and access to financial services.
Market participants may continue monitoring how stablecoin adoption develops, how regulations evolve across the region, and whether traditional financial institutions increasingly integrate digital asset services.
