Prediction market platform Kalshi has launched an investigation into suspicious trading activity surrounding contracts tied to President Donald Trump’s selection of Katie Zacharia as White House press secretary. The review follows a series of trades placed shortly before reports emerged confirming Zacharia’s appointment.
According to reported details, several wagers attracted attention because they were placed while Zacharia’s implied probability remained near 1%. One trade of approximately $19 was placed around 10:43 p.m. ET Thursday, followed by two additional positions worth about $74 and $80 around 1:41 p.m. ET Friday. The contracts later generated potential gross payouts estimated between roughly $1,900 and $4,000.
Kalshi’s market record shows that the Zacharia contract was finalized with a Yes outcome and settled at $1 per contract after the selection was announced. However, settlement of a contract does not automatically determine whether traders involved in a review can access their funds.
The platform’s rules allow withdrawals to be restricted when funds are connected to an ongoing investigation. Kalshi’s insider trading policy states that accounts suspected of violating trading rules may be frozen while investigations are conducted, although the company has not confirmed whether specific accounts involved in this case have faced such restrictions.
The investigation highlights growing scrutiny around prediction markets, where traders attempt to profit from future events ranging from political decisions to economic outcomes. As these platforms expand, concerns around information advantages, market integrity, and surveillance systems have become increasingly important.
Regulators have previously emphasized that prediction exchanges must maintain strong monitoring systems, preserve transaction records, and enforce rules designed to prevent market manipulation or improper trading activity.
Kalshi’s review does not confirm that any trader used confidential information, and the investigation remains focused on determining whether the activity violated platform rules. The outcome could influence broader discussions around transparency and oversight in rapidly growing prediction markets.
Market participants are now watching how Kalshi handles the investigation, whether account restrictions are applied, and whether additional regulatory attention emerges around political prediction contracts.
