Ethereum is approaching a critical technical level as persistent exchange outflows, contrasting institutional transactions, and bearish momentum leave ETH struggling to defend the $2,400 support zone.
A major transaction saw 23,528 ETH, valued at approximately $57.88 million, move from Coinbase Institutional to an unidentified wallet. The destination address has not been linked to a known owner, leaving the purpose of the transfer uncertain. While withdrawals from institutional custody can attract market attention, the transaction alone does not establish whether the ETH was being accumulated, transferred for safekeeping, or prepared for another use.
At the same time, BlackRock reportedly sold approximately $69.68 million worth of ETH, adding another development to the picture of institutional activity. The contrasting transactions offer no clear directional signal on their own, making broader exchange flows and market positioning important factors to monitor.
Ethereum’s spot exchange flows have recorded three consecutive weeks of net outflows, with the latest weekly reading approaching negative $1.5 billion. If the trend remains negative through the weekly close on October 19, ETH would complete a fourth consecutive week of net outflows.
Sustained withdrawals can reduce the amount of ETH readily available on exchanges for immediate selling. However, declining exchange balances do not necessarily indicate stronger buying demand or guarantee a price recovery. Ethereum’s continued price weakness despite these outflows highlights the difference between changes in exchange supply and actual market momentum.
Derivatives data, meanwhile, points to persistent bullish positioning among traders. ETH’s open-interest-weighted funding rate stood at positive 0.0037%, indicating that long-position holders were paying short-position holders under the prevailing funding structure.
On Binance, top trader accounts showed a notable preference for bullish exposure. Long positions represented 69.78% of the reported positioning, compared with 30.22% for shorts, producing a long/short ratio of 2.31.
This imbalance suggests that many traders continue to anticipate a recovery despite Ethereum’s weak price performance. However, concentrated long exposure can also increase liquidation risks if ETH falls further, potentially adding selling pressure during a deeper correction.
From a technical perspective, Ethereum was trading around $2,429 after retreating from resistance near $2,800. The price is now approaching the $2,400 support area, where buyers have attempted to prevent a sustained breakdown.
The daily Parabolic SAR indicator remained above the price at $2,638.98, signaling that the prevailing trend was bearish. The MACD also reflected continued downside pressure, with its reading at -41.36 below the signal line and a negative histogram.
Together, these indicators suggest that Ethereum’s technical structure remains vulnerable even as derivatives traders maintain bullish exposure. The $2,400 level is therefore a key threshold: holding above it could allow ETH to stabilize, while a sustained breakdown could open the door to another corrective move.
For now, Ethereum faces conflicting signals. Exchange outflows may limit immediately available selling supply, and derivatives positioning shows continued optimism among traders. Yet neither factor has produced a convincing price recovery. ETH’s ability to defend $2,400 and regain upward momentum will be crucial in determining whether the current weakness develops into a deeper correction.
