BlackRock is offering a look at how tokenization could change portfolio construction by packaging professionally designed investment strategies into individual blockchain-based tokens through its partnership with Ondo Finance and Intelligent Portfolios.
The three portfolios developed for Ondo focus on high income, diversified growth and high growth. Instead of purchasing and rebalancing each underlying asset separately, investors can hold a single token representing an entire investment strategy.
The concept extends tokenization beyond simply putting individual securities onchain. A tokenized portfolio can potentially move between wallets and platforms, remain visible onchain, serve as collateral or connect with other blockchain-based financial applications.
That could represent another stage in the evolution of tokenized finance. Much of the market’s development so far has centered on individual assets such as Treasury products, private credit, stocks and ETFs. Tokenized portfolios instead place the investment strategy itself onchain.
Pantera has described this transition as moving from individual securities toward onchain portfolios. The potential practical effect is to reduce the number of individual positions and rebalancing decisions investors need to manage themselves.
The market opportunity is substantial. Model portfolios, which are pre-built combinations of investments used by wealth managers, held approximately $9.8 trillion in assets in June, according to Broadridge. Tokenization could provide asset managers with another infrastructure for distributing those strategies.
BlackRock’s partnership with Ondo reflects that potential shift in distribution. Rather than treating blockchain simply as a new settlement layer for individual securities, tokenization could allow complete portfolio strategies to become transferable digital assets.
Other firms are exploring similar models. Bitwise introduced Automated Token Portfolios with Coinbase and Glider in August, allowing eligible non-U.S. investors to follow Bitwise-designed portfolios of tokenized stocks while holding the underlying assets in their own wallets. Glider’s technology automatically adjusts holdings to maintain the targeted portfolio weights.
The development suggests that the next phase of tokenization could focus not only on bringing traditional assets onto blockchains, but also on transforming how professionally managed investment strategies are packaged, distributed and managed.
