Tom Lee, chairman of Ethereum treasury company BitMine, believes a major generational wealth transfer expected between 2026 and 2028 could become a potential catalyst for the next crypto market expansion, as younger investors inherit assets and potentially increase exposure to digital assets and equities.
Lee pointed to estimates from Fundstrat and the U.S. Internal Revenue Service indicating that between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion in wealth could change ownership during this period. According to his view, younger generations receiving this capital may have a higher willingness to allocate part of their portfolios toward risk assets, including cryptocurrencies.
The argument is based on the idea that demographic shifts could create a new source of demand for digital assets. However, the extent to which inherited wealth flows directly into crypto markets remains uncertain and will depend on broader investment preferences, market conditions, and adoption trends.
Beyond generational wealth transfer, Lee highlighted several structural factors that could support the next phase of crypto growth, including Wall Street’s increasing use of blockchain technology for financial assets, the expansion of artificial intelligence applications, and the rise of crypto treasury companies holding digital assets as long-term strategic reserves.
BitMine’s own Ethereum strategy remains a central part of Lee’s market outlook. The company recently increased its Ethereum holdings by an additional 12,532 ETH, bringing its total holdings to approximately 6.03 million ETH.
With its current holdings representing around 4.9% of Ethereum’s total supply, BitMine is approaching its stated goal of controlling 5% of ETH supply. The company would need roughly 76,000 additional ETH to reach that target based on current figures.
Lee previously stated that BitMine intends to stop accumulating Ethereum once it reaches the 5% threshold, suggesting that the strategy has a defined objective rather than an open-ended accumulation approach.
A significant portion of BitMine’s Ethereum holdings is already committed to staking. The company has staked approximately 5.07 million ETH, representing about 84% of its holdings, with projected annualized staking revenue based on current yields.
The combination of institutional Ethereum accumulation, tokenization trends, AI-related applications, and potential demographic changes represents Lee’s broader vision for the next crypto cycle. The key question for the market will be whether these factors translate into sustained demand and real capital inflows rather than temporary optimism.
