NEAR is entering a new phase in its token economics as growing usage across Intents and the network’s AI strategy could increasingly translate into value for token holders. The shift is being driven by revenue generation, token buybacks and proposed changes to issuance that could strengthen the relationship between network activity and the NEAR token.
Intents has emerged as a key part of the investment case, generating revenue and supporting buybacks after reaching sufficient scale and integration. Its cross-chain capabilities are also providing a more measurable source of product-market fit, giving investors an economic foundation beyond the network’s longer-term AI ambitions.
The AI strategy represents a potential second value-accrual channel. The next stage would depend on whether AI products can reach sufficient product-market fit and scale to activate a fee mechanism similar to the one associated with Intents. If that occurs, AI-related activity could create another direct link between network usage and NEAR token economics.
Supply-side changes are also becoming part of the strategy. NEAR previously reduced inflation from 5% to 2.5%, while revenue generated by Intents has been used in part for token buybacks. A recently published governance proposal would reduce inflation further, from 2.5% to 1.6% over a two-year period.
The combination of revenue generation, buybacks and lower issuance points toward an effort to balance increasing demand with a tighter supply profile. The objective is to strengthen NEAR’s relative value against assets including the dollar and Bitcoin while making the token’s economics more visible to investors.
The investment case has also gained greater institutional visibility following the launch of Bitwise’s spot NEAR exchange-traded product on NYSE Arca. The product includes in-house staking, with rewards designed to accrue to shareholders through net asset value. This adds another avenue through which NEAR’s existing network economics can be presented to traditional investors.
The next focus will be whether NEAR can reproduce the Intents model on the AI side by establishing product-market fit, scaling usage and eventually activating a fee mechanism. If those conditions are met, AI could become a second source of value accrual and potentially reshape how the market values NEAR.
