Bitcoin experienced a renewed wave of volatility at the start of the trading week after failing to hold momentum near the $84,000 resistance level, triggering a sharp decline followed by a rapid recovery. The move pushed total crypto market liquidations above $810 million within 24 hours, highlighting elevated leverage exposure across digital assets.
Bitcoin had previously faced strong selling pressure at the end of the previous week, falling to an 18-day low near $80,400 before buyers stepped in and helped the asset recover toward the $83,000 area during the weekend.
The attempted recovery toward $84,000 was rejected as sellers returned, leading to another decline early Tuesday. However, Bitcoin formed a higher low compared with the previous move, briefly falling to around $80,850 before recovering toward $83,500.
The sharp price swings were not limited to Bitcoin. Major altcoins followed a similar pattern, with Ethereum declining toward $2,410 before recovering approximately $100, while XRP rebounded from $1.31 to around $1.36 after failing to break above the $1.40 level. Despite the recovery, XRP remained down more than 3% over the previous 24 hours.
The volatility triggered a significant liquidation event across leveraged positions. Around $810 million worth of long and short positions were liquidated during the day, with long positions accounting for approximately 85% of the total. More than 173,000 traders were affected during the move.
The concentration of long liquidations suggests that many traders were positioned for further upside before the rejection from higher levels. The forced closures added additional selling pressure during the decline, amplifying short-term market volatility.
Bitcoin’s ability to recover after testing the $80,000 region indicates that buyers remain active, but the market is likely to focus on whether the asset can regain momentum above nearby resistance levels. Continued volatility, leverage positioning, and trader activity will remain key factors shaping the next market direction.
